Overview Join to apply for the BOOKSTORE MANAGER role at Highland Community College The Bookstore Manager is responsible for the procurement of general merchandise for resale, marketing, and administering the operations of the bookstore and providing supervision and leadership to bookstore employees and student workers. The Bookstore Manager will be working within a customer service oriented environment and is expected to be innovative and creative in researching, developing, and recommending business solutions. Using effective communication, problem solving, and leadership skills, the Manager manages the operations of the bookstore in keeping with Highland Community College values and competencies by developing and maintaining positive working relations with all contacts internal and external to HCC. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Essentials duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Responsible for procurement of general merchandise (GM) for resale Maintain inventory control for all general merchandise Control GM receipt, inventory, and pricing Monitor sales, figures and margins to ensure budget targets are met Assist in managing the general merchandise component of the bookstore websites Coordinate and expedite completion of a variety of complex activities and projects that relate to the bookstore Textbook Responsibilities Maintain sufficient inventory of all on-campus, online, and regional textbooks Monitor online textbook orders; fill and ship textbook orders within two business days Distribute textbooks to on-campus students on Registration Day and throughout the first week of classes Order textbooks to fill demand as needed Maintain shipping inventory (boxes, packing tape, labels) to keep up with online orders Request Instructor Materials and assist with new textbook adoptions Marketing and Administration of Bookstore Operations Prepare for and complete yearly inventory Purchase supplies and equipment to maintain daily operations Direct the store layout and design for merchandising for products/services Open and close the store and work some Saturdays during football season Mailroom Functions Assign mailboxes to employees or, if applicable, send them to Post Office Maintain a master list of student mailboxes and their corresponding numbers Process all incoming and outgoing mail. Maintain monetary balance in the postal account for use when requiring postage on the meter Drive assigned College vehicle to deliver and pickup mail to and from the Highland Post Office Sort incoming UPS, FedEx, FedEx Express, DHL and USPS packages to students and employees Weigh and process all outgoing UPS shipments prior to their daily pick up Provide the service and courtesy of giving students their packages upon request Supply Center Functions Maintain stock of supplies for students and employees Record purchases of supplies by employees/departments as they occur on department budgets and submit a monthly report to the Grant/Staff Accountant at the end of each month Maintain supply of College logoed envelopes and letterhead Supervision and Leadership Assume full responsibility of the Bookstore Plan, organize, and coordinate formal and informal training of Bookstore employees (one full-time employee and 1-2 student workers) Initiate disciplinary process within scope of authority and in consultation with the Vice President for Finance/Operations and the Director of Human Resources, in compliance with College policies and standard practices Manage personnel issues that arise and resolve other issues independently where appropriate and within scope of authority Manage and allocate workload when necessary and help define priorities, approving the use of overtime when necessary Coordinate/attend various meetings as assigned and apprising issues, proposals, and resolutions Participate on committees as required Maintain control files on matters in progress and confidentiality of files and matters relating to the assigned area Maintain a master calendar for the Bookstore Maintain an appropriate department budget Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education And/or Experience Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance preferred. Previous experience with mail room equipment helpful. Ability to manage cash, personnel, time, inventory, and projects. Retail sales experience helpful. Banking and cash handling experience a plus. Possess analytical and technical skills and proven ability to coordinate department projects and activities. Should be a self-starter and have the ability to work well with others. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Must be accurate and have great attention to detail. Computer literacy required. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
