Job Summary

Join the mission-driven team within the Public Health Laboratory (PHL) at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and promote and protect the health of all Minnesotans!

Work with fellow genetic counselors to provide clinical expertise for the Newborn Screening program as it pertains to genetics and newborn screening. The position provides abnormal result notification as well as involvement with daily efforts to screen 65,000 newborns annually.

Working as a Genetic Counselor, you will:
  • Perform abnormal result notifications, including using clinical expertise to appropriately triage and communicate.
  • Provide program leadership and support in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of newborn screening activities and services.
  • Act as a resource on medical, ethical, legal, and social issues in genetics and newborn screening.
  • Maintain and enhance professional proficiency in newborn screening, genetics, and genetic counseling.
  • Serve as a mentor and resource for external educational efforts.

All positions within the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Public Health Lab will work to cultivate an inclusive work environment for all, with respect to diversity and equity.

This position will have the option of teleworking; however, employees will be required to work in the primary work location of St. Paul at least 50% of days worked each month as required by Statewide HR/LR #1422 Telework Policy and will also be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in genetic counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited program.
  • Active candidate status for board certification as defined by ABGC.

Minimum qualifications to be assessed during the interview process:
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Experience and/or understanding of public health programming and aims.
  • Knowledge of the rapidly changing field of pediatric genetics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Board certification. (Certification must be attained within six months of start date).
  • Licensed by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. (Licensure must be obtained within six months of start date).
