**Description**
The Department of History at Carnegie Mellon University invites applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant or associate professor to begin in August 2026. The department seeks to hire up to two scholars whose work is focused on 1/ the intersection of technology and social change, or 2/ the environmental and social impacts of science, technology, and medicine. Time period and geographic specialization are open, but priority will be given to applicants who work on topics after 1900, as well as on regions not adequately represented by departmental faculty. We are a department of both historians and anthropologists.
**Qualifications**
A PhD in history, anthropology, history of science, STS, or a related discipline is required by July 1, 2026. The position carries a 2/2 teaching load. We seek applicants who show exceptional promise as both researchers and teachers, and welcome applications from scholars at all levels of experience.
**Application Instructions**
The initial application will require a two-page cover letter; full CV; graduate transcript; and a single writing sample (the equivalent of sixty or fewer double-spaced manuscript pages). Applicants who advance to the next stage of the search will be asked to submit three letters of reference; dissertation or book manuscript; and evidence of teaching excellence.
