Overview Assists in providing a safe and secure school environment, foster an optimal learning environment and act as a deterrent to unsafe or poor behavior by performing a variety of duties at schools or other locations, involving the protection of students, staff, patrons, and property of the district and fosters positive relations with the community. Responsibilities Essential Duty 1 : Under the direction, helps implement School Safety and Security Programs, including emergency response operations and searches. Essential Duty 2 : Actively respond to incidents, fights, or other issues in the school or throughout the district that threaten the safety of students, staff, and / or guests up to and including physical intervention if warranted by the safety risk. Essential Duty 3 : Patrols school properties to prevent, discover, and report burglaries, trespass, vandalism, thefts, arson, and other unlawful activities on all MNPS property, and to identify, report, and correct security and safety violations. Position Specific Responsibility 1 : Takes appropriate actions and carries out assignments intended to protect students, staff, visitors, and school properties. Position Specific Responsibility 2 : Responds to calls and complaints received from burglar and fire alarm dispatchers, school personnel, and citizens regarding unsafe conditions or illegal activity on school properties. Position Specific Responsibility 3 : Develops facts and makes them available in report form to supervisory personnel and appropriate agencies. Position Specific Responsibility 4 : Deals effectively and maintains good relations with school personnel, students, parents, and law enforcement representatives. Position Specific Responsibility 5 : Knowledgeable and skilled in conducting searches of individuals, vehicles, and their possessions, including the use of handheld and walk through metal detectors. Other Responsibilities : Performs other duties or tasks as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the responsibilities in this job classification. Other Responsibilities : Prosecutes on behalf of the Metropolitan Nashville Board of Education criminal activity on school board property and testifies in court action resulting from criminal activity committed on school board properties. Education and Experience Requirements Education (training / degree) : High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree preferred. Licenses, Certifications or Registrations Required : Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Tennessee Private Protective Services (TPPS) Armed Security License must be obtained and maintained throughout employment. Experience : One year or more of progressively responsible experience in a security–related field. Skills Required : Knowledge of the MNPS Student Code of Conduct Knowledge of basic methods of providing site security and safety Solid attendance and punctuality Experience with MNPS technology systems utilized for school safety processes (i.e. camera systems or entry screening systems) Ability to work with adolescents in maintaining a positive and safe school culture. Ability to read and adhere to written and oral instructions. Proficient with teamwork and collaborating with colleagues and administration. Demonstrated ability to keep up with fast paced environments and to multi-task.
