Overview The Department of ESPM: Ecosystem Sciences Division at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Employee in the Grantham Lab, in the area of Environmental Flow Science. The project involves developing a user-driven framework for water planning that integrates environmental flow needs into California water management, with a focus on creating modeling scenarios under a range of climate futures and time horizons. Responsibilities Contribute to the development of modeling scenarios that integrate environmental flow needs in California water management. Evaluate environmental water requirements in California?s freshwater ecosystems. Develop novel management scenarios that preserve environmental flows and assess ecological responses to hydrologic alteration and variability. Communicate results to diverse audiences, including policymakers, community organizations, and the general public. Disseminate research results through presentations and publications. Mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Collaborate with a multi-institution team across UC and CSU campuses, NGOs, government agencies, water districts, community organizations, and Native American Tribes. Qualifications Basic qualifications PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program Additional qualifications (required at start) PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date. The candidate should have no more than three years of post-degree research experience by start date. Preferred qualifications PhD in Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Freshwater Ecology or related field. Exceptional data management and analysis skills, including advanced statistical methods and computer programming (e.g., R, Python, Matlab). Experience in environmental flow science and familiarity with environmental flow assessment methods. Familiarity with hydrologic modeling methods (e.g., VIC, HEC-HMS, PRMS) and statistical hydrology. Excellent communication skills and ability to work with diverse partners in a collaborative environment. Strong research productivity with a publication record. Experience working in interdisciplinary teams and familiarity with California water management challenges.
